May/June 2013 Champion for a Cause

JoAnnJoAnn Von Dollen, Director of Operations was chosen as Cardinal's Champion for a Cause (CCC) during a recent staff meeting. CCC is a program internal to Cardinal that allows employees and the company to team together to donate to employees' favorite charitable organizations throughout the year. Employees who participate in Casual Friday dress day each week donate a small sum of money to do so. Cardinal matches the collected funds, and a participating employee's name is randomly chosen during a staff meeting. The chosen employee gets to name the charity to receive the funds collected for two months. JoAnn's charity of choice for Cardinal's May/June 2013 donation was to Susan G. Komen for the cure for breast cancer research. The signing of the National Cancer Act of 1971 by then U.S. President Richard Nixon is generally viewed as the beginning of the war on cancer. It was this legislation along with donations from companies and individuals that funded the necessary research that helped my mother and my cousin fight their own wars on breast cancer. While it gave my mom only one additional year, it was still a year we had as a family. I will always cherish her memory and positive influence on our lives. The strides breast cancer research made from when my mom died in 2005 to when my cousin was diagnosed in 2011 are phenomenal.  My cousin has been cancer free for more than a year, and her prognosis is wonderful.  Her three young children and our entire family owe her current health and future prospects to past, present, and future research efforts that get funded through donations.
